Self Help has been a constant in my life for over 15 years now. Sometimes I do wonder if they work at all. Initially it was all confusing, and there were many instances where I wanted to give up and throw it out all as garbage. Of course, the snide remarks from well wishers and friends weren't helping either.
In recent years, I finally started to figure out that they are all like small pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. Each piece does not give you the big picture. You have to figure out where they all fit. Surprisingly, bit by bit they all start to fit together eventually.
It took me a whole lot of time to figure out where I should start and how I should go about it. Without a mentor, I have spent hours trying various ideas without it all coming together. Not that I claim that I finally see it all now, but I guess I finally see what the fundamentals are and how I can go about implementing the ideas.
So for today, let me just focus on Step 1 and I believe this might be the one that you need to get solidly at the bottom before building up. Self-Disciple.
Easier said than done. I have been hammered with this word all my life without it seeming to amount to much. Though it may have worked sometimes, guess I was not on top of that game all the time. Hence the secret ingredient that many people forget to state "Consistent" Self-Discipline.
For me, the way I went about this was to write out my plan, commit to it and just do it. It has not worked all the time, I have fallen and brooded over it and given up. Then picked myself up, failed again and given up. But finally I started to see the points where I was failing and started to correct myself at the next instance. So if you are still caught up in the same cycle, fret not. You are on the right track. It's most important that you never give up on this endeavor.
Keep motivating yourself in case you fail, that each time you failed is lesson learned and a step closer to gaining mastery over yourself and your mind. Pick a small goal, put a small and doable plan around it and do it. That should get you going and possibly start off the momentum to greater things.
